If you're wondering: where is Hillbilly Elegy? Is Hillbilly Elegy a true story? Who are the people in Hillbilly Elegy? This is a good video for you.
Hillbilly Elegy on Netflix is a powerful and inspiring true story, based on J.D. Vance’s memoir of growing up in his Appalachian hometown, with his drug-addicted mother (played by 6-time Oscar nominee, Amy Adams) and eccentric grandmother (7-time Oscar nominee, Glenn Close).
Vance’s book made headlines across the globe in 2016, when reporters claimed it captured the American white working classes’ sentiments around the Trump vs. Clinton election. The hotly anticipated film adaptation is directed by Ron Howard and follows the family’s struggles with addiction, poverty and violence. “Family is the only thing that means a goddamn”. Hillbilly Elegy, now streaming on Netflix.

All the problems facing the US is due to the exploitation of the lower classes by the rich, including racism. Sure America was racist to begin with, but modern racism is fueled by poverty and inequality. The country is so close to a revolution not dissimilar to the French Revolution. The question is which political party is willing to give that anger a voice before the country actually collapses into a civil war between the rich and the poor. Trump had the right messages but the wrong intent. He never intended on making anything better - his motive was first to establish a media empire when he was running to be president and then to stay in power after he won. If it does come to 20 years for a loaf of bread, then the country is pretty much done.

Excellent! Glen Close and Amy Adams deserve a Golden Globe or Oscar! I have a sister who has struggled with addiction to opioids and Heroin...this rings true. She sadly is lost and still floating around as she is 50 something and has been doing drugs since she was in her teens...i thank Ron Howard for showing us the reality of addiction.

This was an incredibly moving film. The politics was basically everyone should be able to pull themselves up from their bootstraps and become successful. This is a success story. There are many contributing factors whether someone will be able to make it out or not. White and black people have their own unique challenges. I wouldn't judge or make general statements until I know the facts of each family.. The father and daughter were passionate and understood each other on a level their family members couldn't comprehend. The isolation the father and daughter felt caused them to withdraw on some levels which hurt the rest of the family members. The withdraw hurt the grandson who needed guidance. The grandmother saw a cycle reoccurring with her grandson, similar to her daughters which she wasn't able to intervene with when she was young. The grandmother ultimately stop the cycle with her grandson and the families unity pulled them through a difficult time. Regardless of the pain they all experienced they did help each other in the way they new how and in a way their suffering allowed. Each character is unique and requires support and safety. Mental Health Care is important and leaving it unchecked can disrupt your life and others. Poverty, lack of physical and mental healthcare, lack of love and empathy, food insecurity, education having a stable home are all really important for ones development. I would argue no-one has them all but we have to do our best as a society to ensure people have a fighting chance.

I grew up in that part of the country. Ron Howard nailed it. Thank God for the Strong Grandmothers who pushed us to fulfill our dreams. Glenn Close represented so many that wanted their grandchildren to live a better life than they gave their children. I would recommend this 100%. Amy did a fabulous job representing the drug culture in this oppressed community.

Why this movie and book became politicized is a mystery to me, but it probably has something to do with the myopic vision of the Democrats, who fail to see that Trump supporters (you know, those 74 million or so voters) come from extremely diverse backgrounds, that is, coming from the whole expanse of socio-economic backgrounds, not to mention crossing racial and ethnic lines. So, I hope that the left's criticism of the movie as a means to demonize half our citizens can be seen for what that criticism is (expletive, expletive, expletive).

why are people so negative in the comments? why the need to generalize your negative personal experiences? Why can't we focus on our similarities? I am from a middle-class Latin American family and as a human, I really admired the author's real story, his gratitude and respect for his strong grandmother, his ability to overcome the challenges in his life, and his struggle to understand his own identity once he reached those upper echelons of society (thinking of that recruiting event with law firms). I don't think he represents all Trump supporters or all racists. There are good and bad people everywhere, there's no need to dehumanize those who think differently.

Once again, the ever to tired required journalist line, 'so and so who is a Republican, but he didn't vote for Trump.' line. Over and over again. The MSM's way of attempting to diminish the appeal of Trump. Just think for a moment, have you ever heard the opposite? So and so is a life long Democrat, but he didn't vote for Obama. No, you never heard that line. That should FINALLY reveal to every one the undeniable agenda of the MSM.

Apparently director Ron Howard left out much of many sub plots in this movie. I did not read the book, though it was a best seller and caused a sensation . I will read it eventually. In the movie version of the book Ron Howard's directorial depiction of this movie had all of the leading actors give a great performance with a solid storyline, regardless of the left out subplots. Based on a true life story viewing this movie was powerful for me. Yes, the struggles and the triumphs are real and happen frequently in this country; on grander and smaller scales. All three lead actors deserve nominations and wins in their categories.
