Margaret Thatcher was a racist, misogynist and classist, and a terrible leader that changed Britain in ways it is still struggling with to this day - that is to say to its absolute detriment. Even The Crown's less tinted portrayal of her doesn't necessarily do her abhorrence the justice it needs.

This depiction of Thatcher is way too affected and stilted, especially considering this is 1979 - not 1990 - where Thatcher has yet to begin her premiership, and is full of energy. This actress also paints Thatcher as ridiculously royalist and chauvinistic, in a slightly creepy way, where my impression is that she embraced royalty and roles in a respectful but modern and pragmatic light. Just go back and watch interviews from the time, especially one done for Women on Women in 1985 addressing the very question of women in her cabinet. It seems typical of today’s film industry to capture a lot of the (perceived) style and very little of the substance. And this is coming from an American.

@Jim Moriarty Wait, i did not read the comment before first. But i do find those 'what if' questions pretty irrelevant. The fact is, they do. And you find their existance disgusting and i ask why and i still have no straight answer to that question. Why do you find their existance disgusting?
Jim Moriarty
Jim Moriarty Mánuði síðan
@Krijn van Alten So let's get down to business. Why is monarchy still relevant in the 21st century?
Jim Moriarty
Jim Moriarty Mánuði síðan
@Krijn van Alten I am simply rejecting the notion on why monarchy still exits. After all, if it no longer exist, what is there to reject in first place? Hence, why burden of proof is relevant here. And what fact is there to present here? Aren't countries with no king/queen more functional democracy?
Krijn van Alten
Krijn van Alten Mánuði síðan
@Jim Moriarty You did not say that indeed, yet you must understand that your second comment is a bit suggestive like i actually did do that. So i wanted that out of the way. Second of all, the burden if proof is not the right term to use here. You do not present a fact, you present an opinion. Opinions don't have a proof. Yet people could ask you why you have an opinion like that. And that is exactly what i did. So, again: why do you find it disgusting that monarchies do still exist?
Jim Moriarty
Jim Moriarty Mánuði síðan
@Krijn van Alten I never said you are defending monarchy(where did I infer it in my comment?). I just said the burden of proof does not lie in me which means I am in no position to "defend" my position. Those who defend monarchy should justify why monarchy is still relevant in the 21st century.

Gillian Anderson's vocal imitation of the early Margaret Thatcher is atrocious: especially in those early years, Mrs Thatcher would not have sounded like an asthmatic chain smoker, the mannerisms came much later and with her husband her voice would certainly have been much more relaxed and an octave higher no doubt. American actors trying to sound posh British: either they try to hard or they sound like a 1950's Hollywood movie.

I know it’s not a documentary and some things are made up to be more dramatic but I think I at least understand what type of person she was and why she so divisive.
