C’mon people, this is not a documentary series, if you want historical accuracy just read a book, this is just a fictional series. Besides who cares about the skin color of the characters?? The story line it’s what really matters, the messages underneath. What this series made me really question was how disposable marriages are now and how back in the days, people really put an effort to make marriages work because divorce wasn’t an option. This is the main subject of the series and also the way of thinking of the 19th century is completely accurate. As for those who think this is racist, you got it all wrong, it’s suppose to show a dreamworld where black and white coexist in harmony together and have the same rights, what the series does is what our world should have done in the very first place: look beyond colors and accept the fact that we are all just simply humans. In this dreamworld, race is not an issue or anything to talk about because it simply is a physical feature and that’s that, not a cause for division. Although they do point out, once upon a time it wasn’t like that until love managed to change everything because this series is a celebration of true love and the power of love, it portrays the significance of marriages and families but also the injustices of societal norms

We have science fiction with superheroes with extraordinary powers and folks are getting upset over a fictional romance with a diverse cast? That's why they are fiction. Give me break. Some of you need to grow up and get a life. Its one thing to criticize something for being historically inaccurate for it's costumes, it's setting etc. But to say it's inaccurate because the people playing them are not the people meant to play them is ridiculous.. Then we should cast the people on the cover Quinns book to play them in the series. Because they are the only accurate portrayal. Every character is played by someone who is not the person. OMG that is raison de terre of Acting it is about someone playing a character NOT being the character. It can never be the real thing. It can never be 100% accurate even if it is an all White cast

@Chisty A But it is fictional. I mean there is so much in the series that would never have happened in the regency era - I mean taking your sister to a boxing match! - absolutely scandalous. Waltzing!!!! You would have been turned down at Almacks and the ton would shun you! Even some of the costumes silhouettes for some characters and underwear are pure fantasy. The point is quite a lot of the behaviour and social norms in this is pure fantasy. No where near historical... therefore it is a fantasy drama in a historically inspired setting. If you enjoy that, then watch. If you prefer proper historical accuracy watch something else. This is clearly not trying to be accurate by any measure. Therefore they can make up what they like in constructing their fantasy world, whether it’s completely made up dance styles and music that did not exist back then or a black beau. It’s fantasy made for consumption by modern audiences.

@Katy Bee I'm not bothered by race at all. I was simply asking a question of the black community about the revisionist history. It is after all presented as a historical drama, and not a fantasy. In other words, this takes place in 1800's England, not some made-up country in an alternate universe. You can make up characters, but if you place them in a particular place, at a particular point in time, changing the history in which you set them it's quite dicey. Especially when dealing with subjects such as prejudice and discrimination, and pretending like they never existed. I watched a little bit more of the show and found a few other things that bother me as well. I will post separate comment about that.

there we go again, if you don't agree you're a racist ........... I don't care how many black actors they hire, color is only skindeep, for me all people are the same, all that matters is how you behave! but when I see a series about England in a certain periode I would like to see it as it looked then. So if you want to show black people write a series were they fit! I would't want to see white actors in a series about the history of black people either, it's just not fitting! What's next? Let them walk in jeans and have cellphones? If you want to have a diverse cast, make a series in this time period, then its fitting. So now i'm probabely a racist .......

@Ros Marinus that's what I'm saying. I'm all on board to color blind roles, like it happen for example in "Much Ado about nothing" film, or how often happens that British black actors get Shakespearian roles, and I don't see color there just the quality of acting. Here no I couldn't pass the ethical matter, it spoiled the whole thing for me.
Ros Marinus
Ros Marinus 26 dögum síðan
@Patricia7561 We have different views regarding the matter, but we can agree that their taking on the roles of white upperclass is not only inaccurate butinappropriate. What begs the question in the first place is why would these actors even want to play aristocrats in the first place.
Patricia7561
Patricia7561 26 dögum síðan
@Ros Marinus are you capable to read? The issue here is not the unfairness or not , it is not the struggle that black actors go through, it is an ethical matter! Do you understand what an ethical matter is? I'm uneasy with the idea of a black actor playing the part of an aristocracy that had an heavy hand on the slavery business and I find it highly inappropriate and weard that a black actor would actually wanted to play it. As it would be very inappropriate for a Jewish actor to playing a Nazi in a concentration camp. Inappropriate!! Weard!!
Ros Marinus
Ros Marinus 26 dögum síðan
@Patricia7561 I'm actually waiting for news that would scream black washing, but there seems to be none. Apparently, it's alright for black actors to take roles from white actors, but not vice versa. Whether an actor is colored or white, getting an acting job is a struggle. Since this is a British historical series, white actors could've had an advantage to be tapped for these roles. Instead, these roles went to black actors. Again, no one is screaming UNFAIR.

That didn't stop me from watching the whole serie until the end.

Carol Harris 23 dögum síðan
Its possible if you were writing an inverted adaptation of Malcolm X or MLK. But then you have to change the entire cast to make the white power structure black. You can reimagine a new world. The purpose of Bridgerton is to entertain it is not to inform. It is rare that one picks up a fictional regency romance book to learn about the regency era in England. They are nonfiction books to inform. The world would be so much better if many of you learn to open your imagination about new possibilities and new ways to explore something. This is how Marvel Star Wars and even many new discoveries began. Creative minds allowing their imagination to soar. It is not a bad thing. It may not cure many of the worlds ills but it would certainly be a good start. And heck it might even make you happier. Just food for thought

You do know it IS fictional? What do you not understand about the WORD FICTIONAL. not realistically but more for entertainment purposes. If you simply get mad at seeing black people on a fictional show, you may need to see counselling for such prejudice.

Listen to this, the most important thing you'll ever read. If you die today will you go to heaven? Have you ever lied, stolen, used God's name as a curse word (O-M-G)? According to God's law, you're guilty, your headed for hell, ignorance will not be an excuse... But wait, God loves you, he made a way out for you, God's son Jesus died paying for your sin. God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not die but have everlasting life. John 3:16 God is warning the world. End Time prophesies are jumping off the pages of the Bible, plagues, violence, scoffers, government control, earthquakes, fires, floods, people will be lovers of themselves, money, lovers of pleasure rather than God, evil will be called good and good called evil, sexual immorality rampant adultery, fornication, abuse... the ultimate in child abuse mommies killing their babies in child sacrifice (abortion), World leaders are prepping for a One-World order, government, religion (please don’t take a number on your forehead or right hand, read Revelation a number means no heaven, and there's only one alternative) The government is also prepping to have you believe that UFO's are real... Soon the antichrist will come and fix everything, everyone will love him, he will deceive many... then the tribulation will start, life on earth will be horrific. Today if you hear God whispering to your heart please respond before it's too late. Say a humble prayer, pour your heart out to God, receive Jesus as your savior, believe God raised Jesus from the dead, and repent of your sins.

So who knew all these black men and women were a part of upper crust English culture, as opposed to being victims of a racist slave-owning society? I guess things weren’t that bad for blacks in the past then. That’s the message the creators and producers are giving with their “colour-blind” casting. Why they had black privilege back then apparently!

@Claire Broadway there's incremental difference between creating a fictional character and rewriting the history. The 1st is fiction, the 2nd is a lie. Following your arguments, think of a period drama pretending there weren't slavery in America because " it's just fiction and entertainment "

It's not a documentary. It's simply inspired by and set in the regency period. We need both kind of stories: Those that show how it is/was and those that show how it could be/could have been. Sorry to inform you that even the majority of movies and shows "based on true events" or set in a certain time period take (great) liberties when it comes to (historical) accuracy - costumes, hair & make up, order of events, people involved, etc. - to make it more engaging or because it's "a design choice". And by the way, there were upper class POC. Doesn't mean they had it super easy, or slavery and any other structural/institutional racism, discrimination and so on wasn't that bad. Simply two different experiences.

I am not sure about changing actual history in movies and shows. Black people were enslaved, not high society back then. Who is it going to help imagining them having a blast in victorian times? This is really concerning because people forget how much they had to suffer with every movie added to the list.
CE
CE 29 dögum síðan
@RdC Demonstrably you weren't clear. The characters in Bridgerton are not based on real people, so it is not like casting a white actor to play Muhammed Ali. As I said, the concept of reverse racism is deeply flawed. Why would you waste energy worrying about racism against white people, when white people have so much privilege? They are not being hurt by any discrimination against them. The concept of reverse racism is just used as a way of minimising the concept of racism against black people and other minorities. I can't believe this isn't obvious to you. Rather than shrugging your shoulders and saying that this show 'doesn't 'feel right' because of the black actors, ask yourself, 'is something about my attitude not right?'
CE
CE Mánuði síðan
@RdC Watching this show is a voluntary act. Nobody is being forced to watch it. This show is not an example of reverse racism; I'm sorry but what you have said makes very little sense. Reverse racism is a totally floored concept anyway. This show is an example of colourblind casting, and therefore inherently about equality. Perhaps you could show a little compassion and educate yourself, if you really are against racism, as you believe you are. I remain unconvinced.
CE
CE Mánuði síðan

@Jan It's 'Black people', not 'Blacks'; that's a derogatory term. Conspiracy theorists and racists are so boring. Stop pretending that you dislike seeing black people in tv shows and films because of historical accuracy. The fact that interracial relationships bother you is genuinely pathetic. Go to bed Jan.
