Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails discusses how he wrote the iconic track, 'Hurt'. Interviewed by Hrishikesh Hirway of hit podcast and Netflix show, Song Exploder, he reveals the inspiration behind the lyrics and how he fed instruments through an infinite reverb loop to create the haunting sound.
The song would later be covered by Johnny Cash and performed by David Bowie, a moment in music history.
Song Exploder spotlights some of the world's greatest musicians as they reveal how they brought one of their songs to life. Featured artists in Volume 2 include Dua Lipa, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails and Natalia Lafourcade. Now streaming on Netflix.

This episode was fascinating. The amount of thought and effort he puts into his music is ridiculous. Every sound has a reason for being there. It kind of ruined the rest of the episodes for me honestly

Hurt lyrics: _I hurt myself today_ _To see if I still feel_ _I focus on the pain_ _The only thing that's real_ _The needle tears a hole_ _The old familiar sting_ _Try to kill it all away_ _But I remember everything_ _What have I become?_ _My sweetest friend_ _Everyone I know goes away_ _In the end_ _And you could have it all_ _My empire of dirt_ _I will let you down_ _I will make you hurt_ _I wear this crown of thorns_ _Upon my liar's chair_ _Full of broken thoughts_ _I cannot repair_ _Beneath the stains of time_ _The feelings disappear_ _You are someone else_ _I'm still right here_ _What have I become?_ _My sweetest friend_ _Everyone I know goes away_ _In the end_ _And you could have it all_ _My empire of dirt_ _I will let you down_ _I will make you hurt_ _If I could start again_ _A million miles away_ _I would keep myself_ _I would find a way_

Trent Reznor explains what the song means to him, and what it took to write it and Johnny Cash fans are still absolute pricks in the comment sections

@Thierry I don't have a problem with Johnny Cash finding meaning in the song, I have a problem with Johnny Cash fans who do this to all the original and live recordings and unironically shit on the original because "old man makes it mean more" and drop bullshit out of context lines that Reznor says to justify why they like the cover more. It's a piece of shit thing to do.

They are both great. I prefer Johnny Cash's, but Trent wrote it so credit to NIN nails there. The reason it's so great is because so many people can relate to it. So you can't get mad that Johnny Cash could relate as well.
